Marina Rustow
Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Near East
Director, Princeton Geniza Lab, Princeton University
A trove of nearly 400,000 manuscript pages preserved in an Egyptian synagogue has made medievalFustat Cairo the best documented Jewish community in premodern history. For decades, research on the Cairo Geniza has proceeded incrementally, but digital technologies and a new generation of scholars have brought a paradigm shift. This richly illustrated lecture presents some of the fruits of the ongoing research.
